The 2006/2007 Toool competition scores finally online…

Dom Systyem D (used to be my front door lock)

Just one week ago we finally updated the new Toool 2006/2007
competition
webpage. It always takes Paul Boven lots of time and
energy to shoot high detailed images of these locks, and make a nice
web interface where you can see the scores. But he did it and the
results are online.

I like to welcome everyone to take a look at his artwork and click on
the names of the locks to see the detailed high-res images, and opening times…
This year we received quite a number of locks from abroad. Take for
example the Israeli 5-5, Mul-T, Nabob, Peled, Uniferro and Yardeni
locks, or the Corbin from Belgium, or Spanish CVL lock.

After a few rounds of competing, some of the more difficult locks
already stand out. So far nobody has been able to pick the three DOM
locks in this years competition (standard, System D and IX 6SR), as
well as the Mul-T-Lock interactive and the Norwegian Trioving lock.

Last year non of the 26 locks remained closed after one year of
picking, and the year before that only one lock survived.

I am curious how it will turn out this year ….

Very nice! I’ve got a DOM System D cutaway that has been fun to pick on, I’ve set all the pins and the plug still does not turn. Now I’m curious if there’s some type of sidebar or an additional pin in the back of the lock that needs to be discovered.

Anyway, thanks for the great photos.

dosman: I don’t know what the trick is on that lock. I only had one DOM D (that came from my front door) and kindly donated it to the competition to make it a little more difficult this year. I do know one of the German pickers (Arthur?) used it in the German championships, so maybe he/they know the answer? Ah well … we still have 9 months to go before the competition closes and I do intent to open it 😉

Barry, what lock do you use on your front door now then?

  4. Barry says:

cmdrwoody: Hehe … you noticed the tag on the DOM System D image that
it used to be my front door lock. It has since been replaced with an
ASSA Twin, but after finding out these locks still could be bumped
open I had to find a new lock. Nowadays I use an electro mechanical
lock by Salto. Why Salto you might ask? One of their locks had a flaw
in it, yet I was very impressed by the professional way Salto solved
the problem and changed all vulnerable locks in the field in a 6 month
period. Everybody can make mistakes, but I only put my trust in
companies that fix the problems instead of trying to put them under
the rug. So I now use a simple salto system at home and a more complex
    one at work.

Barry, I visited Salto\’s website. Their systems look very interesting. Speaking of ASSA Twin, we have a similar lock here in North America, the Schlage Primus. I\’d assume that with a bump key with the correct side milling the lock is also vulnerable to bumping. Have you got a change to try to pick or bump one of those?

BTW Barry, have you seen this?

    I dig the file name.

  8. NKT says:

    From
    http://www.assalock.com/downloads/bumpthis.pdf
    >In the bumping videos pertaining to high security cylinders, you see the person is
    >holding a high security cylinder in their hand because it is impossible to achieve this
    >while the high security cylinder is stationary in the door without modifying something
    >in the cylinder or key.

Am I missing something? To make a bumpkey, you *have* to modify the key. And bumping is sometimes impossible in the hand, whilst trivial in a vice. I think a PR person wrote that PDF, rather than a locksmith.

However, as far as I know, the Cliq is bumproof. Just don’t quote me on that.

Barry, please, refresh the table-score. I´m amazing you haven´t opened some locks yet. Mul-T-Lock Junior?

  10. kenneth says:

    Great site by the way.

i couldnt see any time at the T14-Trioving,does it mean that no one was able to open this one?
cause in my country we use this lock alot, and i often open this lock with both bumping and picking.

  11. Barry says:

kenneth: yes, we did not managed to open it yet. Maybe come visit one of the meetings and show us how to do it 😉

And thanks for your comment 😉

Salto System – very nice! You don’t need a bump key. All you need is a PET bottle.
Sorry, in most cases the locks in Salto instalations don’t have an automatic locking mechanism.
